Holistic practices may be the new “it” or “up-and-coming” cool trend, and for good reason!  Actually, it  has been practiced for decades and we also owe other ancient civilizations a “thank you” for some of the contributions to our modern day approach to health.  Holistic health can also be defined as integrative health.  Basically, we are WHOLE beings.  Yes, there are different parts to us, although  we need an approach that addresses ALL of our being.  Only then will we be able to find the path to health…mentally, emotionally, spiritually and socially.  All these aspects are intertwined and interdependent, just as your body parts are.  If your heart isn’t healthy physically, it can also affect you in many other ways.  The same is true for your emotional health.  If you are experiencing depression, it can be hard to see how to maintain physical health by eating properly and exercising.  It would be as if you were in a car wreck and you simply took your crashed vehicle in for a paint job.  The underlying frame, or body of the car, would still be out of whack!  Plastering paint on top of it may sort of attempt to hide the issues, although in the long run, no one is fooled.  So how can one address all the problems successfully? 

The first thing to remember is that excess weight is a symptom.  Our bodies are very intelligent.  They  give us warning signs and signals constantly.  We may write it off to excuses such as “I’m just going through menopause” or “I’m just not as young as I used to be”  or “I’m just so busy I don’t have time to take care of myself like I did when I was younger.”  We should realize that it is more likely to stem from other internal issues or external choices that have now lead to the obvious new problem….weight gain!
