6 Steps to a Happy, Healthy Morning
“Your day is pretty much formed by how you spend your first hour of the day. Check your thoughts, attitude and heart.” ~ Author unknown
24 hours…or 1,440 minutes… or 86,400 seconds…all increments of time we have in each single day of our lives. What will we do with them? The possibilities are endless! Many successful and happy people say it could all hinge on how we begin our day. When we arise in the morning, we should reflect on what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, and to love. Today is the only opportunity we will ever have to live this exact moment in time. Why not make the most of it? Here are some tips for creating an environment to capture a healthy, happy start to our day. We are fortunate…today is the first day of the rest of our lives!
Give thanks ~ Immediately upon awakening, express gratitude. It could be for the cool covers and soft pillows that wrapped us as we slept. Maybe the window lets in light that kisses our skin and provides warmth. Perhaps the coffee automatically brewing awakens our senses. The fact that we can smell, see, taste, feel and/or hear is truly a miracle in and of itself. Take a moment to be sincerely grateful from your heart and slowly take in all the gifts that surround us.
Drink 2 glasses of water upon awakening…then warm water with lemon and cayenne ~. One of the healthiest habits we can form takes only seconds from our day and morning routine but makes a huge, positive difference. Our bodies have taken us through the night and have performed wonderfully to process all that we did the day before. It is often dehydrated upon awakening so we should take a moment to drink 2 glasses of water to hydrate, flush toxins and fire up our metabolism. Brain tissue is 75% water so needs water to function at peak performance levels so we should drink to think! Follow this up with a cup full of warm water, squeezed lemon and a dash of cayenne. Take 10 Soul Minutes ~ Grab the warm lemon, cayenne water and head to a peaceful place such as a window seat, patio, cozy chair by the fireplace or wherever you love. Take 10 (or 20 - 60) minutes to nurture your soul. This fraction of time will produce endless benefits when you nurture your most important asset…the soul. Examples could be prayer, inspirational reading, meditation or reflection by journal writing…or a combination of all four! Time given to this practice produces energy that is endless. If you feel off balance or rushed or uneasy during your day, simply return to this source that provided you with your daily morning dose of wisdom. It is a gift that keeps on giving and you can unwrap it again and again throughout your day.
Get moving ~ Stretch, walk, breathe deeply, do yoga…whatever you need to start your day off on the right foot. It clears your mind, boosts serotonin (the happy hormone!), gets your blood and oxygen flowing which boosts self-esteem, encourages strength, makes one more hopeful, strengthens resilience and improves overall health. Now that’s a recipe for success that we can all use!
Seek sunshine ~ Many of us spend a huge part of our day inside at a desk in front of a computer and often times under florescent lighting. A new condition has emerged labeled SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) which is said to describe the winter blues - the lethargy and feeling of sadness and hopelessness from our new modern lifestyles of being indoors for a substantial amount of our days. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression. GET OUTSIDE! A daily dose of sunlight has been shown to boost your mood and affect vitamin D levels, endorphins, nitric oxide levels and mitochondrial energy levels. So go soak in the sun and see your happiness levels rise, then go share it with others.
Brighten your mood by eating a RAINBOW of foods ~ Rainbows crossing the sky after a soaking rainstorm automatically generates a smile and feelings of awe and happiness. A rainbow of colored food choices can do the same. Try these colorful food choice suggestions by mixing and matching and seeking out the many others this awesome planet offers!
